The inverse segregation is a phenomenon that results in the biggest particles of a fluid in motion, at equal density, being on the surface after a certain amount of time. Inflated, the airbag raises the victim`s volume and decreases its density, it therefore increases its “floating” capacity in the avalanche.
Avalanche snowfield tests done with 90kg dummies have also emphasized the role of the airbag position. It was shown that an airbag around the head and on the thorax promotes a position on the back with the head out of the snow. The face of the victim has therefore less chance to be buried.
